IIBEC-Chicago’s parent organization, the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants International or IIBEC (formerly known as RCI, Inc. and the Roof Consultants Institute), is an international nonprofit association of professionals who specialize in roofing, waterproofing, and exterior wall specification and design. Members specialize in design, investigation, repair, and management of roofing, exterior wall, and waterproofing systems. From sprayed polyurethane foam to cedar shakes, from parking garages to air barriers, IIBEC has a member expert for every type of roof, exterior wall, or waterproofing issue in the world today.
The mission of IIBEC is to advance the profession of building enclosure (roofing, waterproofing and exterior wall) consultants. Since 1983, IIBEC’s Consultant members have offered unbiased design, repair planning, quality assurance observance, legal testimony, and general roofing and other building envelope management services. IIBEC’s Consultant members adhere to a strict code of ethics that offers unprejudiced service without affiliation with any product or manufacturer. Current membership is over 3,600. IIBEC boasts an international constituency residing across the United States, Canada, Australia, the West Indies, Europe, and Asia.
The Chicago Area Chapter of the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC-Chicago, formerly CAC-RCI) was formed, incorporated in Illinois, and chartered by IIBEC in 2003 by a group of consultant members who had consulting practices in northeastern Illinois, northwestern Indiana, or southeastern Wisconsin. Our primary purpose, both then and now, focuses on providing in-service educational opportunities for our members and engendering positive working relations with local trade organizations, construction material manufacturers, and local product representatives. To that end, Chapter membership is open to the wide range of persons who are professionally affected by the roofing industry.
About Membership
IIBEC-Chicago members are also members of IIBEC. There are eight classifications of IIBEC membership:
- Consultant members are individuals who derive their primary income from the independent practice of roof consulting, architecture, or engineering;

- Quality Assurance Observer members are individuals who are involved in the independent observation of roof or building envelope construction.
- Facility Management members are individuals who own or manage either public or private buildings or groups of buildings.
- In addition, there are Consultant Affiliate, Industry Affiliate, Associate and Student member classes.

About Professional Registration
IIBEC developed, established, and maintains a Registration Program for professionals involved in the fields of roof consulting (RRC, Registered Roof Consultant), waterproofing consulting (RWC, Registered Waterproofing Consultant), exterior wall consulting, (REWC, Registered Exterior Wall Consultant), quality assurance observations (RRO, Registered Roof Observer and REWO, Registered Exterior Wall Observer). These credentials reflect registrants’ breadth of experience in each field, their comprehensive knowledge of that field, and their commitment to staying up to date in building science developments.
Individuals who earn the RRC, RWC, REWC, RRO or REWO designation are highly regarded because their achievements represent the pinnacle of the building envelope consulting profession.
The Registered Building Envelope Consultant (RBEC) designation will be awarded to those who have earned the Registered Roof Consultant (RRC), Registered Waterproofing Consultant (RWC), and Registered Exterior Wall Consultant (REWC) registrations. The RBEC title will be listed in addition to the other three consultant titles.
